Mark 9-10 (ESV) by Wordle*

Today’s reading is Mark 9:1-10:52.

“And he sat down and called the twelve. And he said to them, ‘If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.’ And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them, ‘Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me’” (Mark 9:35-37).

What a shock it was to learn that the highest rank for Jesus’ disciples is servant. I naturally prefer to be served. Further, I naturally prefer to rank people. Who will benefit me the most? I will rub elbows with these people. I might even serve them a little bit if I think I can get something out of it. Why would a child ever be on that list?

But that is not Jesus. Jesus is a servant. How could I possibly benefit Him? Yet, He served me on the cross. I didn’t deserve it. I wasn’t worthy of it. He did it because He loved me.

I obviously can’t repay Jesus for His service and shouldn’t really try. But, if I want to make a return, if I want to show my gratitude, I can pass that service along to another. What is awesome is when I do receive that little child, that one who cannot help me or benefit me, I’m actually receiving Jesus and the One who sent Him.

Today, I want to serve Jesus. Therefore, I’ll serve others whether they can serve me back or not.

Mark 7-8 (ESV) by Wordle*

Today’s reading is Mark 7:1-8:38.

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35).

A scene from a movie comes to my mind. Toward the end of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” they have actually found the Holy Grail. However, Dr. Elsa Schneider defied the command of the guardian and took the Grail across the seal. The earth quaked and the rock floor split open. Schneider fell in the crack and was only saved by Jones’s quick reaction of grabbing her hand. But the Grail, which had also dropped in the crack, was on a ledge just out of arm’s reach. Jones pleaded with her to let it go and let him pull her up. But how could she? If she had the Grail, she would be rich? She tried to save the life she imagined if she possessed the Grail and slipped from Jones’s hand to lose her life.

As this happened, the earth shook and now Indiana Jones was in the same position as Dr. Schneider. He was dangling in the crack, held by his father’s hands. Despite his protests for Dr. Schneider to climb out of the crack, he was being pulled by the Grail. It had been his father’s life’s work to find that Grail. He had gone through adventure, turmoil, and strife to get it. He wanted to please his father and his father’s life was in that Grail. But Henry Jones (Sean Connery’s character) calmly said, “Indiana, let it go.” Jones reached up and took his father’s hand and was pulled to safety. He gave up his life in that Grail to save his life.

For me, that is a picture of this verse. Our lives can get wrapped up in so many things–education, recreation, occupation, infatuation,etc. Sometimes we want to hold on to Jesus with one hand, while stretching out for something else that we think is what our life is all about. We hope that we can bridge the gap between the two things. But we can’t. If we try to save our lives as we see what is important about them and our goals and desires, we will lose our actual lives. However, if we are willing to give up life on our terms, we can gain real life through Jesus Christ.

We are hanging in the gap, our Grail is just out of arm’s reach. We can attempt to save our life by reaching for the Grail. But we will only lose our lives. Or we can sacrifice our lives to reach up and grab our Father’s hands and allow Him to pull us to safety, saving our lives. The choice is ours.

Mark 5-6 (ESV) by Wordle*

Today’s reading is Mark 5:1-6:56.

“And those who had seen it described to them what had happened to the demon-possessed man and to the pigs. And they began to beg Jesus to depart from their region” (Mark 5:16-17).

Wow! This is too much like me some of the time. Here they were looking at an obvious miracle. A man had been cleansed of a demon. He had been crazy and destructive. Now he is clothed and in his right mind. But all these people can see is the missing pigs. Instead of being able to see the good Jesus could do for them, they could only see the sacrifice they had to make for this great blessing. Sadly, they decided to hang on to the rest of their pigs rather than let Jesus continue to be a blessing in their society.

That is where I am too often. I know there is blessing in time in the Word, time in prayer, time in discussion with others, time in sharing with others, but too often all I can see is the tv shows I’ll miss, the games I won’t play, the alone time I won’t get, etc. I too often choose the empty, wasted, worthless pigs in my life rather than Jesus who can provide real blessing.

Interestingly, this is the only place where Jesus told a man to tell everyone what God had done for Him. I’m thankful that Jesus continues to leave a reminder for me. The key for me is to take that reminder.

So, today, I want to choose Jesus and not the pigs. (By the way, this is Gentile country, so the pigs do not necessarily represent something that is always bad. I’m not saying I’m never going to watch tv or play games again, just saying I need to keep it in perspective.)

Mark 3-4 (ESV) by Wordle*

Today’s reading is Mark 3:1-4:41.

“And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, ‘Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?’ And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, ‘Peace! Be still!” and the wind ceased, and there was a great calm” (Mark 4:37-39).

I can imagine what it was like in that storm. Some were bailing water. Some were frantically trying to row to shore. Some were puking their guts out over the side. Jesus was sleeping. I can imagine that too because sometimes I feel like God is not paying attention to my fears and struggles. Sometimes I feel like I’m stuck on a boat in the middle of a stormy sea and no one is there to help. “Don’t you care?!” I cry to the heavens.

Then I remember this story. Just because the storm is going on doesn’t mean Jesus won’t take care of me. The fact is that even before Jesus finally calmed the storm, no one on that boat died. He hadn’t let them get hurt. He was in complete control. And then He demonstrated that control by saying, “Peace! Be still!,” and the wind and sea calmed.

Like the disciples, I can maintain my faith in Jesus throughout the worst storms. I can know that He will carry me through. He will not let me go through more than I can handle by His grace (I Corinthians 10:13). He does care, but that doesn’t mean He will act on my timetable.

Jesus may be sleeping right now (please understand the metaphor here), but He is in control. I just need to do the next right thing and let Jesus do His thing in His time.

Mark 1-2 (ESV) by Wordle*

Today’s reading is Mark 1:1-2:28.

“And when Jesus heard it, he said to them, ‘Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners’” (Mark 2:17).

Can you imagine going to the doctor because you are not feeling well, but covering up the festering wound that is the heart of the infection because it embarrasses you to actually be sick? That would be ridiculous. And yet, that is exactly what I want to do with Jesus.

I need to rethink the advice I hear from my constant internal image consultant. That little inner voice tells me I need to cover up my sinfulness. I need to hide it. I need to present myself as righteous. I need to demonstrate that I’m good enough. Then Christ will want me. But that is not at all what He says. He wants sinners.

That is great. That means He is calling me. I can run to Him. I can show Him my sins and He will work on them. I can let Him in to see the real me. More than that, I can let me see the real me. I can pull off my blinders, take a long hard look at what I need to hand over to Jesus to clean up.

He is not asking for the few, the proud, the righteous. He is calling those who will admit they are sinners in need of a Savior.

Today’s reading is Mark 15:1-16:20.

“And he said to them, ‘Do not be alarmed. you seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here. See the place where they laid him’” (Mark 16:6).

What more encouragement do I need today than to know the tomb was empty. Many go on pilgrimages trying to find the tomb. Why? He is not there. How much better to find Jesus and let Him live in my heart than to find a tomb where He no longer resides.

I can serve with faith today because that tomb was and still is empty.

PS. What struck you in today’s reading?

Today’s reading is Mark 13:1-14:72.

“And Jesus said to him, ‘Truly, I tell you, this very night, before the rooster crows twice, you will deny me three times.’ But he said emphatically, ‘If I must die with you, I will not deny you.’ And they all said the same” (Mark 14:30-31).

How many times have I told Jesus I will not commit some sin ever again? How many times have I done it again? But I am not alone. Even Peter, the great apostle, did the exact same thing.

Of course, this doesn’t give me permission to go out sinning today. It simply reminds me that if Peter did this and Jesus accepted Him, providing Him with progressive victory and growth, Jesus will do the same thing for me. I must not revel in my failures. They are not a badge of honor, but a cloak of humility. However, I do not have to linger in despair over them either.

I will still make my commitments to overcome. But, when I falter, I will not turn away from Jesus but turn back to Him. 

Thank you, God, for you grace in Jesus Christ.

Today’s reading is Mark 11:1-12:44.

“And they brought one. and he said to them, ‘whose likeness and inscription is this?’ They said to him, ‘Caesar’s.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.’ And they marveled at him” (Mark 12:16-17).

The denarius was Caesar’s because it had his likeness on it. If I want to know what is God’s, I must discover what has His likeness on it. “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them” (Genesis 1:27). Where do I find God’s image inscribed? Not on 10% of my income or possessions. I find God’s image inscribed on me.

I may render taxes to the government. I must render me to God. When I give myself to God, the issues of money, behavior, allegiance, service, relationships, will follow naturally.

I must give myself to God today. Everything else will take care of itself.

Today’s reading is Mark 7:1-8:38.

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35).

The depth of scripture is astounding. The layers in one verse amazing.

Those who preserve their physical lives by stepping off of God’s path will lose their eternal lives. Those who so surrender to God even to the point of physical death will be granted eternal life.

Those who want to hang on to their lives by hanging on to their goals, wants, desires, plans, possessions at the expense of God’s goals, wants, desires, plans, possession will lose the life that matters. Those who give up their own ends for God’s will gain an abundant life they cannot imagine.

But today I recognized a third layer. Those who believe they can save themselves by their own strength, power, will, self-discipline, strict adherence, will lose their lives. Only those who understand they cannot save themselves and therefore give control of their life to Jesus (cf. Galatians 2:20) will gain eternal life. As long as I think I will save me by doing God’s will good enough, I will never make it. Once I concede I won’t do God’s will good enough and just give myself to Jesus, then God will grant me the grace, by faith, to overcome and be victorious.

“Taking her by the hand he said to her, ‘Talitha cumi,’ which means ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise.’ And immediately the girl got up and began walking (for she was twelve years of age,) and they were immediately overcome with amazement” (Mark 5:42-42).

I have seen the miraculous healings of Jesus’ ministry as allegories for our own spiritual healing. To be sure, these miracles took place, but the purpose for recording them is to say if Jesus could give physical life to these people, He can give spiritual life to me.

Thus, the story of Jairus’ daughter really hit me this morning. Her name is not given. She is just Jairus’ daughter. She did not go seeking healing or resurrection. Jairus went on behalf of his daughter. Many of the miracles say if Jesus could heal them physically or resurrect them physically, He can do the same for me spiritually. But what does this one say? It says if Jesus could heal or resurrect Jairus’ daughter, He can spiritually heal and resurrect my daughters (and my sons).

I needed to read that today. As I grow and see my own defects that Jesus is conquering in me, my biggest fear is how those defects have been harming my own children. At times, I think their salvation is hopeless because they’ve been stuck with a father like me. In despair I think, “I’ll never be able to raise them up or heal them. They are lost for sure.” But that is exactly the point. Just as Jairus could not heal or raise his daughter, I cannot heal or raise mine. But Jesus can.

What does that mean for me? That means today I don’t have to go about trying to manipulate the right action out of my kids as if their salvation depends on me. What it means is I simply need to do the right thing. I need to behave in right ways because they are right, not because I’ve decided if I act this way my kids have to be alright. If my kids will be raised and healed, Jesus will do it. I can turn it over to Him. Of course, I understand that my kids may decide they don’t want that. That will be sad for me indeed. But that won’t be my fault.

Today, I’m going to quit trying to manipulate my kids into salvation. Instead, I’m just going to do the next right thing and let Jesus do His job of raising people and healing them, even my kids.

PPS. For just a little fun, since the story of John the Baptist’s beheading was in this reading, I thought I’d share a cute story I heard once. Perhaps it will give you a little chuckle and brighten your day.

In the kindergarten Bible class, the teacher was dramatically telling the story of John the Baptist. She told how Herod had promised his step-daughter anything up to half his kingdom as a reward for her dancing. She told with flourish as the young woman asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.

“Tommy,” she said, “What would you have said to this wicked woman if you had been Herod?”

Tommy tilted his head and replied, “If I had been Herod, I would have told her, ‘No, no, I meant something in the other half of my kingdom.’”
